The RX-78-2 Gundam is the iconic mobile suit from the Mobile Suit Gundam television series. Part of the RX-78 Gundam line, it was secretly constructed at Side 7 and played a pivotal role in shifting the tide of the One Year War in favor of the Earth Federation against the Principality of Zeon. The suit was primarily piloted by Amuro Ray.

At the time of its creation, the Gundam was highly advanced. Its frame, made of lightweight Luna Titanium Alloy, was both lighter and significantly stronger than Zeon's mass-produced mobile suits. It could withstand machine gun fire from the MS-06 Zaku II with minimal damage. In terms of offensive power, the Gundam surpassed the Zakus, primarily engaging enemies with its beam rifle—making it the first mobile suit to wield firepower comparable to a battleship's beam cannons. Additionally, the Gundam was equipped with two beam sabers, which emitted extremely hot plasma capable of slicing through any metal. These beam sabers could also be extended into a beam javelin, allowing for strikes from a greater distance.
